Generally speaking, the average pallet weighs between 35 and 45 pounds. There are a few different variables at play, including the type of wood being used, the thickness of the board, and obviously the size of the pallet itself.

What is the Average Pallet Size?

If you're using the term "average" to mean "standard," that would be the 48-inch by 40-inch pallet. That is by far the most commonly used pallet in the United States.

There are a number of other sizes available, including but not limited to ones like:

  • 48-inch by 48-inch pallets.
  • 42-inch by 42-inch pallets.
  • 36-inch by 36-inch pallets.

Each has its own unique strengths, which is why it is important to keep a variety on hand in your warehouse or other environment. You never know when you might need a smaller-than-standard pallet for a specific job and when that time comes, you don't want your shipping process to get delayed.

How Much Weight Can a Pallet Hold?

How much weight a pallet can hold will obviously vary depending on exactly what type of pallet you're talking about. To continue with the example of the standard 48-inch by 40-inch pallet, you're talking about something that can carry a static load of approximately 4,600 pounds.

If you switch things slightly to a 48-inch by 48-inch pallet, however, that number drops to a load of 3,700 pounds. The same is true of a 42-inch by 42-inch pallet.

900 pounds is a significant difference for not necessarily a major change in size, which is the perfect example of why it is so important to make sure that you are using the best pallet for the particular job you have in front of you.

THE IMPORTANCE OF CORRECT PALLET SIZING & WEIGHT LOAD

Remember that when in use, pallets are supposed to act as a rock-solid foundation for your shipping efforts. The pallet does more than simply make it possible to move multiple items at once.

It helps to support them in transit. It keeps them safe so that you don't end up with damaged products or shipping delays. Unless you're using the right pallet size and weight, you're not going to be able to accomplish your goals - which is an issue that will cost you money (and cause reputational damage) almost immediately.
